The women’s locker room is more than athletic women in sports bras and messy ponytails. Besides the aroma of old, sweaty gym sneakers and the flowery scent of Victoria Secret body spray, the women’s locker room at University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is like a time capsuled Hall of Fame. Women from Freshman to Seniors, either Volleyball or Basketball, have experienced the members-only vibe of the locker room. Outside of the locker room is just a large navy blue door with a gold paw print of a mountain cat, but on the inside is blue gradient carpet, white brick walls, and long wooden lockers that are personalized by name plates with each player’s name and jersey number. The same young ladies that are dressed in their navy blue and white mesh practice jerseys and lacing their sneakers are prepared to give their all on the basketball court. The locker room is filled with inspirational quotes such as “We ask of you just one thing…all you have” that is accompanied by framed photos of championship teams from years past who gave all of what they had. “Andrea Dolton” is one of the many printed names of players who have led by example with her hard work in both academics and athletics. Conversations are shared between these young ladies as they prepare for practice. “Ugh, what a long day it's been!” one girl says as she laced her sneakers, “Let’s just make practice the best we can.” “Let’s just go out there and play hard,” another girl says as she ripped off a lengthy piece of pre-wrap to jimmy-rig it into a headband to hold back her curly brown hair. All of these ladies share a common goal. A goal that is achieved by long restless days, hard work, and competition. The sound of the joyous rally of women channeling their mind and emotions to play echoes through the locker room. The indistinct screams of competitive young women fill the locker room with school spirit and pride. These women skip out of the locker room with competitive faces and screams of excitement. The winds of their path breeze the aroma of hair spray and gym socks. This locker room is more than a place to fix your hair in the mirror or shower. It is the sports home of young women who share a bond through laughter, hard work and victory.
